Microlearning is probably the most misused and misunderstood term in L&D. Everyone’s talking about it, but are we all referring to the same thing? So what defines microlearning? The duration? And is it the miracle solution to every training problem? In plain terms: microlearning is breaking down dense content into a series of single-focus nuggets that leverage a variety of content modalities to deliver spaced learning through customized learning paths, not just ‘short training,’ but training built around a single, complete idea at a time.
As part of our GoBeyond initiative, we decided to find answers and decode this seemingly innocuous term that has become a buzzword among the learning fraternity.
Sounds simple, but let’s break it down. There are three major considerations that go into designing meaningful and impactful microlearning, which form our core microlearning best practices:
This involves more than dividing content into sections that are about 3–5 minutes long. For each content nugget to be truly effective, it needs to stand its own ground (deliver a complete idea), stay directly relevant to the topic without frills, remain aligned to the learning objective(s), and serve as a tool that supports in-time, on-demand learning in the workflow.
This involves determining whether the nugget is a fact, concept, process, procedure, or principle, and then using the right learning modality to present it effectively.
This happens to be the most ignored aspect of microlearning. It requires determining the sequence and intervals at which nuggets should be rolled out for maximum engagement and retention, and defining learner groups with associated learning paths most relevant for each.
Designing a microlearning solution requires intensive planning to create a simple output. In other words, it means making learning learner-centric, not content-centric.
Our corporate microlearning programs are built for specific moments, not as a generic replacement for longer courses:
Behavior nudges and reinforcement following formal training or onboarding
Product or feature updates that need fast, targeted rollout
Just-in-time task support in the flow of work
